JURA

'Eastwards/Weswards' with poet John Burnside

10 colour offset litho, double concertina book in presentation box/double slipcase, of poems, oak-gall ink drawings and palindromic landscpe studies.

Artist's Book created by David Faithfull in 2009 recording the collabortive residency with poet John Burnside (d. 2025) on the Isle of Jura off the west coast of Scotland in 2008. Published in a limited edition of 250 copies by the Scotish Book Trust with support from Arts & Business Scotland and JURA whisky as part of the Writers in Residence progarmme, initiated by Marc Lambert and the Scottish Book Trust

Additionally published as a visual chapter by David Faithfull in 'The Spirit of Jura' (Polygon 2009), this records the collaboration. ISNB: 978-12-84697-128-0 with writers John Birnside, bernartd Crick, Janice Galloway, Philip Gourevitch, Romesh Gunesekera, Kathleen Jamie, Liz Lockhead, Swetha Prakash and Will Self.

All the images were drawn in Jura sourced oak gall ink with a Hebridean reed pen. Faithfull collected a supply of Jura oak galls, transforming them into oak gall ink, following an old medieval recipe similar to that used to make the ink for the Book of Kells.

The ink and  a few hand crafted hebridean reed pens, were gifted to John on Jura during the residency, giving the writer the opportunity to reassess writing as an authentic calligraphic act.

The artist and writer explored Jura on foot including various trips to the very particular mountain wildernesses of this remote island, both looking in particular at the Gaelic place names.
